A digital product passport (DPP) is a structured digital record that holds a product's key sustainability, composition, origin and end-of-life information. You reach a digital product passport by scanning a data carrier — usually a QR code or a GS1 Digital Link — printed on the product or its packaging.
In plain terms, a DPP turns a physical item into a trustworthy source of data. Instead of a static label, a consumer, the next actor in the value chain, or a market-surveillance authority can see what a product is made of, where it came from, how long it lasts, how it is repaired, and how it is recycled.

What is a Digital Product Passport?
A Digital Product Passport is the digital "life story" of a product, standardised so it is readable by both people and machines. Each passport is tied to a unique product identifier and can describe the product at different levels of granularity — model, batch or individual item — depending on what the law requires for that product group.
Unlike a printed label or a leaflet, the passport is updated and stays accessible throughout the product's life cycle. That gives consumers transparency before they buy, gives businesses better supply-chain data, and gives authorities a standard way to check compliance.
Human-readable and machine-readable
A well-formed passport serves two audiences at once. People see a clean summary — materials, care instructions, repair options — when they scan the code with a phone. Systems, from recyclers' software to customs and market-surveillance tools, read the same data in a structured, machine-readable form. Because every passport carries a unique identifier, records can be linked, audited and kept up to date without reprinting anything on the product itself.
Why the EU is introducing DPPs
The legal driver is the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation — ESPR, Regulation (EU) 2024/1781, which entered into force on 18 July 2024. The ESPR does not mandate a DPP everywhere at once. Instead it sets requirements per product group through delegated acts under Article 4.
The goals are clear:
- Circular economy: make repair, reuse and recycling easier by putting data in the hands of whoever needs it.
- Ecodesign: encourage more durable and resource-efficient products.
- Anti-greenwashing: turn sustainability claims into verifiable facts, not marketing.
- Consumer and authority information: a single, reliable reference point for every product.
What data does a DPP contain?
The exact fields differ by product group, but most implementations cover these categories:

The precise mandatory fields for each product group are set by ESPR delegated acts.
Crucially, a passport is not a single static file. Fields such as ownership, repairs or recycling status can evolve, and the passport is designed to reflect that history across the product's life — which is why it lives online rather than being frozen onto the packaging.
How does a DPP work?
The flow has three parts:
- Data carrier on the product. A QR code or GS1 Digital Link is placed on the product or packaging. Scanning it opens the passport.
- Hosted data. The full passport is hosted by the manufacturer or their designated DPP platform — not by the EU.
- EU Registry index. The EU DPP Registry stores only the unique product identifier, a registration identifier, the commodity code, the granularity level and a link to where the passport is hosted.
The Registry, which went live in 2026, is a decentralised index: it does not host the passport data itself. Economic operators connect through a secure interface or an API, with identity verified via eIDAS (Regulation (EU) 910/2014) — legal entities need a qualified electronic seal from a qualified trust service provider. Its access management, user verification, data-registration and technical rules are set by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1778. When someone scans the carrier, the link resolves to the hosted passport rather than to a central EU database. The Registry's job is simply to make each passport findable and to confirm it is officially registered — a lightweight directory that points to, but never replaces, the operator's own data.
Which products need a DPP & when?
The first mandatory rollout is for certain large batteries. Other product groups are brought in gradually through ESPR delegated acts.

- Register the passport in the EU DPP Registry.
- Keep the data current across the product's life cycle.
